  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) greatly increases the risk of ischemic stroke. In the general population, it affects about 2% of people, but this number is much higher in older individuals. However, the prevalence rises to 3.7%–4.2% in individuals aged 60–70 years and further increases to 10%–17% in those aged 80 years or older [Reference].

    Patients with AF have a fivefold higher risk of stroke, contributing to 20-30% of all strokes, which are often more disabling and fatal [Reference].

    However, AF detection remains a challenge. Traditional monitoring methods like Holter monitors often miss paroxysmal arrhythmias. A study highlighted that a 14-day continuous ECG monitoring patch was significantly more effective than routine 24-hour Holter monitoring in detecting such arrhythmias, particularly AF [Reference]​​. This extended monitoring is crucial in identifying AF episodes, which are transient and might not be captured during shorter monitoring periods.

    By using continuous ECG monitoring we detect more cases of AF, enabling early intervention. This proactive approach is essential, especially in the elderly, to reduce the risk of ischemic strokes and improve overall health outcomes.
